Are Boomtown D.C.’s Days Numbered?

D.C.'s boom days may by threatened as the financial largesse of the federal government wanes.

nationaljournal.com is reporting on D.C.'s future growth.

Many quarters of Northwest D.C. feel like the global financial recession never hit. Just try reserving a table at one of the more than 24 new restaurants on 14th Street, the city's main artery of gentrification, and you'll quickly get the picture. The next available table for two at 7:00 p.m. does not open up until early December at Le Diplomate, the $6.5 million French bistro built on the site of a former dry cleaner.

Purchasing real estate is hotly competitive in D.C., too, with multiple bidders pushing up the median sale price of homes by 18.1 percent over the past five years. This to say nothing of the recent influx of millennials to the city, or its high median income of $66,538—compared with the national average of just over $50,000—or the huge jump in the last decade of the number of people in the region in the top 1 percent of the income bracket.

But, don't be fooled around the nation's capital. While it is true that the district has weathered the economic storm far better than most other cities, economists warn that D.C.'s boom days may by threatened as the financial largesse of the federal government wanes.

This Awesome Ad, Set to the Beastie Boys, Is How to Get Girls to Become Engineers

This is a stupendously awesome commercial from a toy company called GoldieBlox, which has developed a set of interactive books and games to “disrupt the pink aisle and inspire the future generation of female engineers.” The CEO, Debbie Sterling, studied engineering at Stanford, where she was dismayed by the lack of women in her program. (For a long look at the Gordian knot that is women’s underrepresentation in STEM fields, check out this New York Times article from October.) As the GoldieBlox website attests, only 11 percent of the world’s engineers are female. Sterling wants to light girls’ inventive spark early, supplementing the usual diet of glittery princess products with construction toys “from a female perspective.”

We love this video because it subverts a bunch of dumb gender stereotypes—all to the strains of a repurposed Beastie Boys song. In it, a trio of smart girls could not be less impressed by the flouncing beauty queens in the commercial they’re watching. So they use a motley collection of toys and household items (including a magenta feather boa and a pink plastic tea set) to assemble a huge Rube Goldberg machine. Watch to see what happens next. (And watch another great GoldieBlox ad from earlier this year.)

Bonus points to GoldieBlox for releasing an award-winning book in which its marquee character Goldie, the “kid inventor who loves to build,” dreams up “a spinning machine to help her dog, Nacho, chase his tail.” Screw you, Soul Cycle. That’s the kind of spinning machine we can get behind.

O Street Market, Then & Now

From the Washington Post : O Street Market: Symbol of violence becomes a marker for D.C.’s resurgence.

In a city where gun violence had become so widespread that the police had a special unit called Redrum devoted just to drug dealers killing drug dealers, the O Street Market shootings hit hard.

“There were just bodies falling everywhere,” a man at the deli counter said afterward.

For the next two decades, the market in Northwest Washington was a symbol of urban decay and dysfunction. The vendors bailed out. The roof collapsed. The shell of the historic structure, built in 1881, was vandalized.

And then, in 2001, three developers who believed that Shaw would find its way back bought the symbol of the drug wars and waited for the right moment, which they believe begins this week.

The Exclusive Nike Flyknits Team USA Will Be Wearing At The Winter Olympics

Darrelle Revis's business manager just leaked a picture of the new Nike Flyknit chukka boots that will be worn by Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympics, in the same vein as the Flyknit Racers worn at the 2012 London Games. Why does this random ass dude have these? I honestly don't know, but maybe because when your client has an exclusive Nike shoe you're considered important or something I guess? Inner circles are confusing to me because I've never been in one. As you can see, this shoe incorporates a Nike Flyknit Chukka upper with a terrible Free boot sole that it typically utilized on their army looking ass boots. Chances are, homeboy here is going to get in trouble for leaking these images because Nike don't play that, but expect these to hit stores sometime next year.

BYT's list of The Least Douchey Bars in DC - Agreed

BYT just posted their list of The Least Douchey Bars in DC. This is an interesting topic as DC has always been predominantly known as a very conservative city...until now. The last 10 years has seen an artistic up-rise in the city like never before. Cool nightlife spots, celebrity chefs, a great music scene, and forward thinking neighborhoods booming are all to blame. And we are barely scratching the surface of what the city is predicted to see in the near future. All that being said, we still have our handful of douchey bars and the douchebags who love to attend them. Here's how to avoid those....CLICK HERE.

Imp-ish: Eating Tacos Out of Fritos Bags

Taken from UrbanDaddy.com:

The future is here. No, not the future of jetpacks and intimacy with robots. You’ll still have to wait for that.

But the future where you eat tacos out of Fritos bags. That’s here. Tonight.

Here then,
Impala Cantina y Taqueria, a Mexican pop-up coming Tuesday nights to the Pug and Saturday nights to the courtyard next to where you’ll soon find a permanent restaurant.

What we have here: basically a utilitarian way station for Mexican street food. On Saturday, that involves alfresco touches like strings of lights overhead, fire pits and old barrels. At the Pug, however, that involves indoor touches (like warmth). Also, it’s tonight, so it’s got that going for it.

Either way, you’ll encounter a rotating array of tacos like beef tongue and barbacoa, and Sonoran hot dogs with bacon, pico de gallo and cheese.

But you’ll probably want to ask for a bag of Fritos or Doritos. Yup, namely their Impalocas. They’re basically a Frito pie on steroids, which has them stuffing tilapia ceviche, chorizo or a pickled mix of cactus fruit, mango and habanero into a bag of chips and letting you attack the whole mess with a fork.

And just like that... Cool Ranch ceviche is born.
