Mutulu Olugbala better known by his stage name M-1 is a rapper, activist and author from Brooklyn, New York. M-1 is best known for his work as one half of the Political hip hop duo DEAD PREZ with stic.man. Dead Prez’ confrontational style, combined with socialist lyrics focused on an ethical stance against corporate control over the media, especially hip hop record labels, put Dead Prez on a back packer pedestal. However, the release of their global hit entitled “Hip-Hop” in 2000 exploded them into the hemisphere and made Dead Prez a household name. Dead Prez’ 2013 release, Information Age further proves their relevance and ability to evolve within the current social and political based hip-hop movement.

Through the length of Dead Prez’ career, M-1 has found many other ways to express his art. Appearing in a handful of films and documentaries, while also releasing 2006’s solo record Confidential and 2011’s collaboration album, AP2P with Italian producer, BONNOT.
