Two Harvard students have found a way for unskilled bakers to have their cake and eat it too.
John McCallum and Brooke Nowakowski, both rising juniors, are the inventors of Spray Cake, a microwaveable batter in an aerosol can.
“(When) you spray it, it comes out pre-risen, so it bakes in less time,” McCallum, 20, told WBZ.
It takes just 30 seconds to make a Spray Cake cupcake in the microwave, according to its creators. A full cake can supposedly be ready in one minute.
McCallum and Nowakowski said the batter is organic and contains similar ingredients to the box cake variety. However it does not contain baking soda or baking powder because the whipped cream-style can allows it to rise.
“Honestly, we were kind of shocked that it hadn’t been done before,” Nowakowski told the station.
Spray Cake began as a project for McCallum’s Science & Cooking class.
It went on to win the Harvard Innovation Challenge. Spray Cake then took the prize at New England marketing trade organization The Ad Club’s “Brand-a-thon” with a campaign created by NAIL Communications.
The next step may be supermarket shelves. The students said they already have a seller lined up but are in need of a local manufacturer.
