Words of Happiness

Happiness is such a wonderful feeling, why should we only use one word to describe it? Open up that vocabulary and let the good times roll.

1. “Chirky”

From the late 19th century, meaning “cheerful.”

2. “In high snuff”

An expression for “good mood,” used from the late 17th century until the 1930s.

3. “Over the moon”

Before humans literally went beyond the moon, this popular phrase from the 1930s means “overjoyed.”

4. “Gassed”

Started out meaning “intoxicated,” but by the 1950s it just meant happy.

5. “Tickled”

As in “tickled pink.”

6. “Merry-pin”

Also started as a reference to tipsiness, this referred to a general good ol’ time in the 19th century.

7. “Ricochet”

In the 19th century, this bouncy term also meant “splendid.”

8. “All callao”

This 19th century sailor’s slang either referred to the Peruvian port of Callo or acted as a play on the word alcohol. Or both.

9. "Gaudeamus"

From the Latin for “let us rejoice,” this oldie refers to a merry jamboree.

10. "Kvelling"

From the Yiddish for “so happy and proud my heart is overflowing.”

11. “Chuffed”

This current slang in the UK certainly needs to make a trip across the pond.

12. “Delira and Excira”

A term the Irish use to mean “delirious and excited.” We need to borrow this one too.

13. “Gladsome”

This classic from the 14th century doesn’t get used enough anymore.

14. “To Lick the Eye”

This confusing 19th century gem was used to describe someone who was extremely pleased.

15. “Cock-a-hoop”

From the phrase “to set the cock on the hoop,” meaning open the tap and let the good times flow.

Fox News’ Attempt To ‘School’ Jon Stewart On Food Stamp Abuse Blows Up On Them

During Thursday’s episode of The Daily Show, host Jon Stewart replayed a clip from an earlier episode where he mocked Fox News for exaggerating the scope of so-called food stamp abuse. He then showed how Eric Bolling of the Fox News show The Five responded. Bolling tried to ‘school’ Stewart on how the network was merely trying to highlight rampant waste and fraud in the program. Of course, Stewart was able to brilliantly take down Bolling and the network on this claim.

First, Stewart responded to the clip of Bolling defending the network’s coverage by saying the following:

“You thought we were ridiculing you for exposing government waste? No, that’s a reasonable thing to expose. What we were ridiculing was the way you exaggerate the scope of public assistance abuse through random, often unprovable anecdotes.”

He then proceeded to do an awesome and vicious summary of how the network has shamed and ridiculed poor people over the past few years. He pointed out how the network devoted SIX segments to the ‘mooching surfer’ who was able to get an EBT card, and then used him as the face of millions of people who seek food assistance. Stewart also played clips of Fox News personalities and contributors mocking and insulting impoverished people in this country, calling them ‘moochers’ and ‘parasites’, while insinuating that they live the good life.

After highlighting the network’s derisive commentary on the poor of this country, Stewart then moved onto how Fox News has covered corporations abusing the tax laws of this country. The anger was palpable with Stewart in this portion of the segment. He played a clip of Fox News stating that $3 billion has been lost on abuse, fraud and waste in the food stamp program. He contrasted this with another clip of Bolling stating that $4 billion in subsidies to oil companies was just a pittance.

Stewart claimed that Bolling was the ‘worst math teacher ever’ by essentially claiming that $3 billion is greater than $4 billion. The segment also moved on to showing other Fox News’ contributors, as well as 2012 Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, justifying tax shelters and loopholes so that corporations and wealthy individuals can avoid paying billions in tax dollars. He focused his attention on how Fox seems to not have a problem with the ultra-rich hoarding money and avoiding paying their fair share, as they’ve stated that this should all ‘trickle down’ on the less fortunate.

Of course, as Stewart pointed out, that doesn’t appear to be the case. He helpfully featured a clip about JP Morgan Chase making millions off of EBT cards over the past few years. Chase got so much business from the EBT card venture that they had to create more customer service jobs. Wouldn’t you know, those jobs were outsourced overseas so they could pay those employees $3.25 an hour, rather than that largess being ‘trickled down’ to the American public, many of whom were being forced to use these very same EBT cards due to lack of good employment.

In the end, Eric Bolling and Fox News though they could take on Stewart and call him out for being unfair. As is nearly always the case, Stewart was able to turn it around and make them look even worse than they did initially.

Sam Adams Beer Abandons St. Patrick’s Day Parade Over Anti-Gay Discrimination

The Boston Beer Company, which produces Sam Adams beer, has pulled its support of the South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade over its exclusion of LGBT groups. The company released the following statement explaining its decision:

We have been participating in the South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade for nearly a decade and have also supported the St. Patrick’s Day breakfast year after year. We’ve done so because of the rich history of the event and to support veterans who have done so much for this country.

We were hopeful that both sides of this issue would be able to come to an agreement that would allow everyone, regardless of orientation, to participate in the parade. But given the current status of the negotiations, we realize this may not be possible.

We share these sentiments with Mayor Walsh, Congressman Lynch and others and therefore we will not participate in this year’s parade. We will continue to support Senator Linda Dorcena Forry and her St. Patrick’s Day breakfast. We wish her all the best in her historic stewardship of this tradition.

The statement speaks to recent “negotiations” between the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council, which sponsors the parade, and LGBT advocacy group MassEquality. A compromise was considered that would allow a group of gay veterans to march, so long as they wore nothing to identify themselves. The plan was scrapped when parade organizers accused MassEquality of a “ploy… to enter this parade under false pretenses.”

Chris Brown is BACK in jail, because it's a day ending in 'Y'

Chris Brown is on his way to jail right now, because he violated a judge's order by getting booted from the rehab facility where he's been living for nearly 4 months ... TMZ has learned.

The judge in the Rihanna beating case ordered Chris to live in the Malibu rehab facility for 90 days to get anger management therapy, and he completed the stint earlier this month.  BUT ... at the last court hearing, the judge modified things and ordered Chris to stay in the facility while the Washington D.C. assault case ran its course.

The deal was this ... if Chris left rehab, he would go directly to jail.

Sources familiar with the situation tell TMZ ... Brown was thrown out of the rehab facility this morning, for violating "internal rules."  We do not know precisely what Chris did, but we're told it did not involve violence or drugs.

Sources tell TMZ ... Chris was caught having "an inappropriate relationship" with a female worker at the beginning of the month, but that is NOT why he was thrown out today.

As you recall, Chris was previously thrown out of a different facility for throwing a rock at his mom's car window.

Chris was picked up by L.A. County Sheriff's deputies this afternoon and is now in jail ...being held with no bail.

Floating miniramp in the middle of Lake Tahoe

Bob Burnquist is one of the most progressive skaters of all time. It's not just because of how he skates, but what he skates. Fullpipes, crazy Megaramps with hips, and, oh yeah, helicopters. Burnquist's latest invention is a floating miniramp in the middle of Lake Tahoe. Visit California recruited Burnquist to take on the project as part of its "Dream Big" campaign. It wasn't easy. Master rampbuilder Jeff King and his team spent 300 man hours and used 1,250 screws to create the 7,300-pound ramp. But for Burnquist, who says, "All my dreams came true in California," this was yet another example of an "out there" idea turning into reality
