Sculpture of Homeless Jesus Sparks Controversy

When it comes to religious art, depictions of Jesus tend to feature him as saintly, reverential, floating above mere mortals or healing them with his touch (or he’s a baby). But a sculpture by artist Timothy P. Schmalz shows Jesus as a homeless man wrapped in a blanket, asleep on a bench.

The life-size bronze work is titled, appropriately, “Homeless Jesus,” according to the artist’s website, and an edition of it has been installed in Davidson, North Carolina, by the local St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, which received the statue as a memorial for a parishioner “who loved public art,” writes NPR. Predictably, some residents are less than thrilled about the thought-provoking work — one woman called the police the first time she saw it, explaining, “I was concerned for the safety of the neighborhood.” Others have said that “Homeless Jesus” creeps them out or insults them.

On his website, Schmalz writes that the sculpture was inspired by Matthew 25 and explains the religious intention behind all of his work: ”I am devoted to creating artwork that glorifies Christ. … I describe my sculptures as being visual prayers” (including against abortion). St. Alban’s rector, the Rev. David Buck, stands by “Homeless Jesus” and the message it sends, and he’s in good company: last fall Schmalz presented the wooden model for the work to Pope Francis, who prayed over and blessed it. (Do I see a candidate for the Holy See pavilion at the 2015 Venice Biennale?)

Other Christian organizations are interested, too: a version was placed outdoors at the University of Toronto’s Regis College last spring, and Chicago’s Catholic Charities are hoping to purchase and install a version, the Chicago Tribune reported, although the cost may prevent them. The price — $35,000 according to the Tribune, though the NC version was bought for $22,000, says NPR — apparently deterred the rectors of St. Michael’s Cathedral in Toronto and St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York from purchasing versions of the sculpture in the past.

Naturally, critics have been quick to latch onto the price. A blogger on the conservative site Wizbang discussed “the actions of an Episcopal Church in North Carolina that wasted $22,000 on a metal statue of a ‘homeless Jesus’ to make a political statement instead of spending that money on, well, you know, the homeless.” Since the sculpture was given as a gift to the congregation, this argument doesn’t actually hold water, but it raises the interesting question of how art fits into the larger scheme of religious organizations, and at what cost. How do you value in dollars the potential inspiration of reflection and prayer?

My favorite criticism of “Homeless Jesus,” though, comes from local resident Jerry Dawson. In a letter to the editor of community site DavidsonNews.net, Dawson writes:

My complaint is not about the art-worthiness or the meaning behind the sculpture. It is about people driving into our beautiful, reasonably upscale neighborhood and seeing an ugly homeless person sleeping on a park bench.

Clearly St. Alban’s has some work left to do.

Hip-Hop Meets Art History

The best ideas often seem so obvious that you kick yourself for not thinking of them first. They happen when people draw connections between the millions of bites of information they take in every day, whether by ingenuity or sheer coincidence.

Cecilia Azcarate, a designer at Johannes Leonardo creative agency, must have been having one of those moments when she came up with the idea for her art history tumblelog, B4XVI (which stands for “before the 16th century,” as all the art she uses is). In an unlikely marriage, it pairs pictures of rappers with historical sculptures, paintings, and statues from the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection, tracing the swag and power poses of hip-hop artists like Young Thug and Whiz Khalifa to pre-Colombian effigies and Netherlandish paintings.

The results are uncanny. We all know 103, but who knew that 2 Chainz’s hand signs have their roots in the blinged-out, 14th-century reliquary arm of St. Valentine? Or that Kanye West is actually taking style cues from a fur-swathed young man in a 16th-century northern German painting? Or that Hot Sugar looks so much like a baby-faced Jesus?

It now seems clear: one century’s highbrow is another’s lowbrow. Azcarate’s side-by-side images give us a reason to ditch the labels altogether.

Sean "Diddy" Combs, Howard University Dropout, Faces Backlash as School's Commencement Speaker

Sean "Diddy" Combs is facing a bit of backlash after Howard University announced this week that the rapper will speak at their upcoming commencement ceremony and will also receive an honorary doctorate degree.

Some Howard University student are upset over the honor because Diddy dropped out of the Washington, D.C.-area college back in 1990 to pursue his music career.

"Can someone explain why Diddy, a person who never graduated from Howard, is speaking at graduation?" on Twitter user shared. Another wrote, "diddy is gonna make the commencement speech at Howard but what is he gonna say. ‘Well I dropped outta here & got rich but good luck.'"

Man petrified of the Kardashians

Man so petrified of the Kardashians that the sight of semi-naked Kim on TV makes him VOMIT with disgust

Kim Kardashian may be one of the most sought-after women in the world - but one man can't stay far enough away from the reality TV star.

Retail assistant Mike Amess has an unusual phobia: he is absolutely petrified of the Kardashian family.

He breaks out in a cold sweat whenever he sees or hears the famous family and says the sight of a semi-naked Kim even makes him vomit with disgust.

The 24-year-old from Exeter explains, 'Just hearing the sound of the Kardashians' nasal voices or catching a glimpse of them on screen makes me feel nauseous and shaky.

'My hands get clammy, my breathing gets heavier and I start sweating. Sometimes, I get teary and want to retch.'

Mike, who is gay, says his fear of the Kardashians started when he watched Kim's now notorious sex tape at the age of seventeen.

Mike says, 'I was raised Catholic and growing up, I tried to repress my sexuality and deny that I was gay.

'Loads of the boys at school were going on about how good Kim Kardashian's sex tape was. I thought I'd give it a watch in the hope it would turn me on.

'I downloaded the video and watched it secretly in my bedroom. But the sight of Kim writhing around with her huge bum and the sound of her horrible high-pitched wailing repulsed me.

'I really wanted to be aroused by her so I kept watching it but she made me feel more and more upset.

'By the end of the tape, I had burst into tears. The experience left me terrified and I never wanted to see Kim's face again.

'I have come to terms with my homosexuality now but my dread towards her has never left.'

Mike says that his phobia has got worse since Kim's fame skyrocketed and his fear now extends to the whole Kardashian family.

He explains, 'Kim and her sisters look and sound so similar - they're a mess. They make my stomach churn, I hate it.

'I dislike everything about them, especially their physical appearance. I don't understand how anyone could find them attractive.

'I can't stand their voices either. They're so whiny and shrill - it really gets under my skin.'

The Kardashians' prominence in the media means that Mike's phobia blights his everyday life.

'It's impossible to get away from Kim, let alone her whole family. Every website or magazine you read has them plastered all over.

'I really enjoy reading the news but if I see Kim on the cover of a newspaper or a big picture of her across a website, I won't go near it.

'It makes life really difficult. Sometimes, I miss out on a lot of important news or celebrity gossip because I have to avoid anything which features the Kardashians.'

Mike's most recent ordeal saw him throw up after accidentally seeing Kanye West's racy music video, 'Bound 2', which features a topless Kim straddling the singer on a motorbike.

He says, 'One day, I was lazing about on the sofa in front of the TV. I was skipping through music channels and that video came on.

'Seeing Kim naked, with her boobs bouncing about like that brought back memories of that horrendous sex tape. It was like reliving that incident all over again.

'Before I knew it, I was sweating like a pig and throwing up. When I hear 'Bound 2' on the radio now, I have to switch the station immediately.'

Mike's fear of the Kardashians has also had disastrous effects on his love life and he was forced to break up with a former boyfriend because of it.

Mike, who is now single, says, 'A lot of the gay community love the Kardashians so it makes dating tough sometimes. I've been romantically involved with several people who like them and each one of these relationships have ended badly.

'My last boyfriend watched all of their shows and kept up with the celeb gossip surrounding them. He thought the Kardashians were fascinating.

'At first, he found my fear funny and kind of cute. But over time, he wanted to talk about the Kardashians with me and of course, that's not something I was really up for doing.

'We had a big argument once when he demanded to watch the latest episode of 'Keeping up with the Kardashians' whilst I was with him.

'We had a blazing row in which he called my phobia immature and attention-seeking. I ended up storming out of his flat.

'In the end, it became difficult spending time with him and definitely played a role in our break-up.'

Despite the daily afflictions of his phobia, Mike has never sought medical help as he is embarrassed of his condition.

He explains, 'I don't know how I could face a doctor about it. I can just see them laughing in my face the minute I told them about my fear of the Kardashians. It would be totally mortifying.'

Mike often goes to extreme lengths to avoid the Kardashians and relies on the support of his friends.

He says, 'I have to get my friends to go through a newspaper or magazine before I read it and rip out any pages which contain pictures of the Kardashians.'

Mike says he is constantly mocked by his friends who think his phobia is amusing.

He explains, 'Although my mates are supportive, they always make fun of my fear and play practical jokes on me.

'Once, my friend put a picture of Kim Kardashian on his bathroom door so I couldn't go to the loo all night. It was unbearable!

'Another time, one of my mates got drunk at a party and chased after me with a photo of Kim's 'Belfie' on his mobile phone.

'They find it hilarious but they don't realise how traumatic it is for me. I wish I wasn't scared of the Kardashians.'

Jelly Belly Chairman Doesn't Seem To Think Transgender Kids Deserve Equal Rights

Let the Boycott begin

Et tu, Jelly Belly?

The chairman of America's lovable jelly bean brand apparently has helped fund efforts to repeal trans-friendly legal protections in California.

In September, Herman G. Rowland Sr., the chairman of the board of Jelly Belly Candy Company, Inc., donated $5,000 to Privacy for All Students, a coalition fighting for a referendum effort to repeal transgender rights legislation California Assembly Bill 1266.

The bill, signed into law by California Gov. Jerry Brown in August, requires the state's transgender students to be allowed to "participate in sex-segregated school programs and activities, including athletic teams and competitions, and use facilities consistent with his or her gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on the pupil’s records."

Herman's donation to Privacy for All Students was first reported by Frontiers' Karen Ocamb, who spotted the chairman's name on the California secretary of state's campaign finance information website.

"Like to munch on those gummy bears or jelly beans or candy corn as you spruce up your Halloween costume?" Ocamb asked. "Well, for every handful of what you think might be good, clean fun or a childhood sense memory, you’re putting money into the pocket of one of the men who’s trying to take away the rights of trans and non-gender-conforming expressive students."

While Jelly Belly did not immediately respond to The Huffington Post's request for comment, this wouldn't be the first time Herman has been tied to conservative causes. During the 2012 presidential election, Herman donated money to three GOP candidates and hosted a rally at Jelly Belly for former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

This newest revelation, however, comes on the heels of a recent controversy involving the chairman of Italian pasta company Barilla, who announced in September that his company would not feature gay families in advertisements because he prefers the "traditional" family.

While Guido Barilla's comments sparked an immediate backlash, there has been no word of a Jelly Belly boycott just yet. However, a Change.org petition posted by the National Center for Lesbian Rights has already garnered several thousand signatures with its plea to "tell Jelly Belly Chair Herman Rowland Sr. that all students should be treated equally and have the same opportunities to be successful in school."

Wu-Tang Clan affiliated rapper bizarre suicide attempt

image.jpg

Andre Johnson, an L.A.-based, Wu-Tang Clan-affiliated rapper, jumped off a second-story balcony Wednesday morning in an apparent suicide attempt after cutting off his own penis, TMZ is reporting.

Law enforcement sources told TMZ they responded to a call and found Johnson lying on the sidewalk at a North Hollywood apartment building critically injured. He is now at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The status of his penis is unknown.

Johnson, a.k.a. Christ Bearer, is a member of the duo Northstar, who were discovered by Wu-Tang's RZA outside an L.A. radio station in 1998. The Wu-Tang producer took them on and provided beats for their 2004 debut, RZA Presents Northstar.

Johnson is also affiliated with other groups in the Wu empire, including West Coast Killa Beez. Just yesterday, he released this music video with Rugged Monk of Wu-group Black Knights.

Update: TMZ confirms the man in the incident was Christ Bearer, and reports other members of Northstar who live in the same building said the self-mutilation and dive off the balcony came suddenly and without warning. They say Johnson wasn't on "any hard drugs" that would cause him to do such a thing.

Meko the Pharaoh is the only other official member of Northstar, but the Wu-Tang spinoff group has its own affiliates, including Black Knights.

Update 2: CNN reports the severed penis was transported to the hospital. No word on whether it's being reattached.

Public Enemy rapper Flavor Flav pleads guilty to threatening girlfriend's teenage son with a kitchen knife

Rapper Flavor Flav has today admitted chasing his girlfriend's son with a kitchen knife during an argument.

At an earlier hearing the 17-year-old said Flav threatened to kill him before grabbing a kitchen knife, chasing him to his bedroom and plunging the blade through the door.

The 55-year-old reality TV star was facing 12 years behind bars for felony assault charges, but had them reduced to misdemeanor offences at the last minute after the court heard he had reconciled with his family.

The attack happened at the artist's Las Vegas home in October 2012.

Flav, who appeared in court under his real name of William Jonathan Drayton Jr, was sentenced yesterday at Clark County District Court to probation and four months of domestic violence counseling.

During his defence statement Flav said he loved the boy, now aged 18, calling him a 'son', but neither he nor his mother were in court.

The entertainer was initially charged with felony assault and child endangerment with a weapon, but pleaded guilty to attempted battery and battery constituting domestic violence.

After leaving the courtroom, Flav pulled his signature clock necklace from underneath his red T-shirt before speaking to reporters.

His defence attorney said they don't expect today's ruling to affect an upcoming felony speeding and driving without a license case in Mineola, New York.

Flav added: 'I'm standing here in front of the camera, not behind bars.'

The New York charges stem from Drayton's Jan. 9 arrest while driving to his mother's funeral on Long Island.

Attorney Kristina said Drayton was paying fines to resolve that case.

If Drayton violates terms of the agreement in the domestic violence case, he could face up to a year in county jail, Judge Kathy Hardcastle said.

Flavor Flav has been performing on tour since his induction last year with the rap group Public Enemy into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Hardcastle set an Aug. 18 court appearance to close the case if Drayton completes counseling.

49ers' Aldon Smith arrested at LAX, allegedly made comment about a bomb

LOS ANGELES (AP) — San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was arrested Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport after authorities said he became belligerent during a security screening and threatened that he had a bomb.

The 24-year-old player was randomly selected for a secondary screening at Terminal 1 and became uncooperative with the process, airport police Sgt. Karla Ortiz said. She said he told a TSA agent that he had a bomb before walking to the gate. When airport police officers caught up with him, Ortiz said Smith became uncooperative and was taken into custody.

A witness video posted on TMZ.com shows Smith exchanging words with an officer as he was being handcuffed and escorted out of the gate area.

Smith was booked for investigation of making a false bomb threat. FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said anyone who makes a bomb threat at an airport is potentially subject to federal charges, although no such charges have been filed against Smith.

A message seeking comment from Smith's agent wasn't immediately returned.

With the arrest, Smith is involved in three pending criminal cases.

"We are disappointed to learn of the incident today involving Aldon Smith," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. "As this is a pending legal matter and we are still gathering the pertinent facts, we will have no further comment."

A fearsome pass-rushing specialist, Smith took a five-game leave of absence from the 49ers last season to undergo treatment for substance abuse. He rejoined the team Nov. 5.

Smith played in a 27-7 home loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 22, two days after he was arrested and jailed on suspicion of DUI and marijuana possession. After the game, he publicly apologized for his behavior and later announced he would leave for treatment.

Leading up to the playoffs in early January, Smith said during an interview with The Associated Press he was encouraged by the strides he had made to better himself off the football field that put life — and his work — in perspective. He said at the time he hadn't had any alcohol since before his Sept. 20 DUI arrest, and that he wasn't craving it. When he rejoined the team Nov. 5, he insisted he was on the path to lifelong sobriety stuck by that statement.

His teammates rallied around him in support of his rehab and, later, his return to the team.

Smith emerged as one of the NFL's most-feared pass rushers in 2012. He had a franchise-record 19.5 sacks that year, but failed to record a sack in his final six games including the team's postseason Super Bowl run.

Smith finished with 8½ sacks and 34 tackles in 11 games last season, making eight starts.

In November, Smith pleaded not guilty to three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon, stemming from a June 2012 party at his home. Investigators say several shots were fired, two partygoers were injured and Smith was stabbed. In the subsequent investigation, prosecutors say detectives found five unregistered weapons in Smith's house, including two Bushmaster rifles and an Armalite AR-10T. They say those are assault weapons illegal to possess under California law.

Smith and former teammate Delanie Walker were named in a lawsuit last September filed in Santa Clara County Superior Court by a Northern California man who said he was shot at a party at Smith's house on June 29, 2012. The players charged a $10 admission and $5 per drink, the lawsuit said. Smith and now-Tennessee Titans tight end Walker were allegedly intoxicated on Smith's balcony when they fired gunshots in the air while trying to end the party, the lawsuit said.

Smith, selected seventh overall in the 2011 draft out of Missouri, had previously been arrested on suspicion of DUI in January 2012 in Miami shortly after the 49ers lost in the NFC championship game.

This is the latest in a long list of legal issues for 49ers players the past two years — and recently, too. The Niners, who lost to the rival and eventual champion Seattle Seahawks in the NFC championship game, have made nearly as much news away from the field as they have in free agency this offseason.

On Thursday, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was one of three NFL players named in a Miami police report involving a woman who passed out in a hotel and later woke up in a hospital not knowing how she got there, though no one has been charged with a crime. Kaepernick, 49ers wide receiver Quinton Patton and Seahawks wide receiver Ricardo Lockette — a former 49er — were with the woman at a Miami hotel where Lockette lives, according to the Miami Police Department report. The police say it's too early to determine whether a crime was committed.

Late last month in San Jose, 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver was arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run and reckless driving after he drove a car into a bicyclist and fled. He is the player who underwent sensitivity training after his anti-gay remarks leading up to the Super Bowl after the 2012 season. He has done outreach to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Last summer, another starting linebacker, Ahmad Brooks, was investigated by the Santa Clara County District Attorney's office on allegations that Brooks repeatedly hit a teammate on the head with a beer bottle. No assault charges were filed because of insufficient evidence.

According to police, Brooks hit then-teammate Lamar Divens with the bottle three times and then punched him in the face during an early morning argument June 8. Divens sustained a 3-inch cut on his forehead.

Another member of the defense, Demarcus Dobbs, was suspended for Week 1 last season for his own arrest on suspicion of DUI and marijuana possession in 2012.

You have one day to buy Google Glasses

Glass is still a ways off from becoming a product sitting on store shelves alongside Ray-Bans and Oakley glasses.

But while Google is working to give Glass an image of cutting-edge cool rather than nerdy niche, it’s also hoping to keep up anticipation for what arguably will be one of the company’s most important gadget launches. With some hype-building in mind, Google is selling Glass to anyone in the U.S. for one day only April 15.

Headsets will go on sale at 9 a.m. ET at glass.google.com, for the usual full price of $1,500 plus tax. To purchase a pair, you have to a U.S. mailing address and be at least 18 years old.

This is the first time Glass has been made available to the entire American public. As of April 16, sales will revert back to invite only. Only a few thousand people have Glass today. Google calls these folks Expolorers — a group of consumers and developers serving as guinea pigs testing the hardware.

To see what your $1,500 dollars buys you, check out the video above where we walk you through the process of buying into Google’s vision of the future.

Michael Phelps ending retirement, Eye on Rio

Michael Phelps is coming out of retirement, lured back into the pool by the fun of it and the possibility of swimming at a fifth Olympics in Rio in 2016.

The 22-time Olympic medalist will compete for the first time since the 2012 London Games at a meet in Mesa, Ariz., on April 24-26.

Bob Bowman, the swimmer's longtime coach, told The Associated Press on Monday that Phelps is entered in three events -- the 50- and 100-meter freestyles and the 100 butterfly.

"I think he's just going to test the waters a little bit and see how it goes," Bowman said by phone from Baltimore. "I wouldn't say it's a full-fledged comeback."

Phelps returned to training last fall and re-entered the U.S. drug-testing program. He has completed his six-month waiting period by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency to be eligible for competition.

Bowman said Phelps is "pretty far" from being back in top form. He has been training Monday through Friday with Bowman's team at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club.

"He's gotten back into good shape since September," the coach said. "He can give a good effort and certainly not be embarrassed. He's in enough shape to swim competitively."

Besides Phelps, USA Swimming said Olympians Ryan Lochte and Katie Ledecky are among those expected to swim in the Arena Grand Prix at Skyline Aquatic Center.

"I'm excited to see what he can do," Ledecky told the AP by phone in between classes at her high school in Maryland. "Definitely it'll bring some more energy to swimming again."

Phelps turns 29 in June and is the winningest and most decorated athlete in Olympic history. He captured 18 gold medals and 22 medals overall at the last three Summer Games. He broke Mark Spitz's record for a single Olympics by winning eight gold medals at Beijing in 2008.

If he comes back and doesn't dominate, Bowman said it wouldn't tarnish Phelps' reputation.

"His legacy is sealed," the coach said.

Ledecky agreed that Phelps has nothing to lose by diving back in.

"It's just for his own personal kind of thing," she said. "He's already done so much. Whether he adds a couple more gold medals or not, what he's done has been so incredible, whatever he does next should be accepted by all."

Phelps had vowed that he wouldn't swim into his 30s. Since retiring less than two years ago, he has stayed busy with a chain of swim schools, a foundation focused on water safety and appearances on behalf of his sponsors. He devoted lots of time to golf and participated in a reality show with famed coach Hank Haney.

His camp is being low-key about the return.

safe_image.php.jpg

"I think he's just really enjoying it," Bowman said. "He enjoys the training and being physically fit. He just kind of wants to see where he's at. It's more really for fun. It's been nice for me to see him swim just for the joy of it really."

Olympian Jessica Hardy, who will compete in Mesa, said many swimmers were surprised by the news.

"He kept it pretty much under wraps," she told the AP. "Even if he's not at peak performance, it's great for the sport and each athlete particularly to keep learning from him. I don't think anyone wants to put pressure on him. He's accomplished everything you pretty much can. It's just great to see what else you can do."

Phelps won't be coming back for the money, having earned tens of millions of dollars in endorsements during his career. However, his endorsement potential certainly goes up if he's in the water. His presence on the pool deck will give a boost to USA Swimming, which can endlessly market him.

"Anytime you can have the most-decorated Olympian in history in the pool, it's a fantastic thing for swimming," said Chuck Wielgus, executive director of USA Swimming. "USA Swimming and Michael share the goal of growing the sport, and his return to competition will surely inspire even more kids to give swimming a try."

Phelps' name recognition goes far beyond the pool deck. He's as well-known as athletes from far more prominent sports, such as NBA star LeBron James, which is an accomplishment for a swimmer whose sport gets most of its attention in an Olympic year.

In Mesa, Phelps will swim 100 free and 100 fly preliminaries on the first day. Then, if he qualifies, he'll decide which race to swim for the evening finals, Bowman said. He'll swim the 50 free on the second day and might swim the 50 fly "just for fun," the coach added.

Phelps will stick to the shorter races and some relays rather than the grueling individual medleys he swam during the height of his career.

"He's really doing this because he wants to," Bowman said. "There's no outside pressure at all."

Phelps has already entered the remaining Grand Prix meets in Charlotte, N.C., in May and Santa Clara, Calif., in June, although Bowman said no decision has been made on whether he will compete.

Depending on his early results, Phelps could compete in the U.S. national championships in August in Irvine, Calif., where teams will be selected for the 2015 world championships.

"I wouldn't say it's 100 percent on the radar," Bowman said. "After Mesa, we're going to sit down and talk about it."

Oprah breaks Pharrell, Pass the tissues

This unfiltered emotional display only makes the most likable man in pop music more likable*. After watching a montage of fan-made videos to his No. 1 hit "Happy" during his interview on Oprah Prime, Pharrell wept (and wept). When the renaissance man finally pulled himself together, he explained, "It's overwhelming, because it's like I love what I do, and I just appreciate the fact that people have believed in me for so long that I could make it to this point to feel that." Wow, superstar humility: whoever would have thought it were possible in this day and age?

As for Oprah, she gets it. She really gets it.

*Not even that big dumb hat that he seems to have in every shade can reduce his likability. That is likable.

Meet Diamond D - Coming To The Lodge April 26th

Diamond D is a Producer, writer, DJ and Grammy Award winning hip-hop legend. Period.

The first time I was introduced to Diamond D’s work was in 1992 when I heard Brand Nubian’s “Punks Jump Up To Get Beat Down.” I was blown away by everything that track included; from the beats and rhymes, to the way its rhythms swung with an aggressive nature mixed with its nonchalant and somewhat effortless delivery. That same year I was blindsided by another record that became one of my favorite tracks of that year, fellow D.I.T.C. members, Showbiz & AG’s “Soul Clap.” Being a DJ myself, when I play these tracks in a club still to this day, its more than just playing classic hip-hop records, it’s like making a statement, telling the crowd that you’re in the know and aware of something that once shook music. These tracks helped change the way a lot of people looked at hip-hop. And definitely helped change the way hip-hop producers made music going forward.

In the years to follow, Diamond D produced classic records for A Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, Fat Joe, Cypress Hill, House of Pain, The Pharcyde, KRS-One, Busta Rhymes, and Mos Def, as well as tracks for The Fugees iconic album, “The Score,” in which Diamond was awarded a Grammy for his contributions.

Diamond D is currently releasing his highly anticipated album “The Diam Piece” which includes guest appearances from Pharoahe Monch, Black Rob, Talib Kweli, A.G., Fat Joe, Pete Rock, Alchemist, Sadat X, Hi-Tek among others (see official trailer to the right). The Lodge At Red Rocks is very happy to have Diamond D on Saturday April 26th alongside Sirius XM radio’s Shade 45 co-host, Sammy Needlz for Diamond’s official, “The Diam Piece” listening party. Come early at 8pm to hear the album and discuss the record with Diamond D himself. Then Sammy Needlz kicks off the dance party at 10pm. 21 & Over. As always, The Lodge is NO COVER.

Interconnection | an installation of weightless discs illustrates the unstoppable forces of nature

“Interconnected, ” which was designed for Lexus as part of Milano Salone 2014, demonstrates the constant give-and-take in nature, as well as our planet’s delicate balance.

The Brooklyn-based designer Takeshi Miyakawa (previously) was recruited by Tamura to assist in the complex structural design process. “I thought it was a piece of cake but it turned out to be one of the most challenging project I’ve ever worked on,” wrote Miyakawa. The pair were also joined by music composer Aya Nishina, who created an accompanying soundtrack for the installation.
