Get To Know: KING BRITT - Coming To The Lodge At RedRocks This Saturday 1/24
The last time Philadelphia soul spinner extraordinaire King Britt played in Washington, DC he was on the steps of the Jefferson Memorial during the 2014 Forward Festival. Ideally, Britt's style will work at H Street's, The Lodge at Red Rocks because if headed out with a group of people who love dance, hip-hop, classic R & B and top-40 taken to a progressive place, he'll keep everyone intrigued, excited and dancing all night.
Opening for Britt is DC's Adrian Loving, who as a DJ has most recently gained tremendous acclaim for being a part of the East coast's beloved 80s funk/soul explosion known as Axel F. If the idea of hearing disco boogie, champagne soul and jheri curl activated R & B sounds like a fun night on the town, the cosmopolitan man about town Loving is more than up to the task.
Here's three more reasons to check out King Britt at The Lodge at Red Rocks.
a) Remember jazz-rap favorites Digable Planets whose "Rebirth of Slick" was an unlikely pop/rap hit in 1992? When the rap trio toured with Sade, King Britt was chosen to serve as their DJ for the three month touring stint.
b) In 2007, Britt was a fellow in the prestigious and Philadelphia-based Pew Fellowship in the Arts program, which supports an artist's ability to explore and create unique material that will ultimately aid in their long-term development.
c) To get a true sense of Britt's diverse tastes, consider the idea that he's worked with the likes of rappers De La Soul, legendary saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr. and also fellow Philly-based house producer (of 1993's "Higher States of Consciousness" fame) Josh Wink.
If looking for a night on the town where the vibe will be funky, but veer into all grooves both known and unknown (yet magically still keep you dancing), a night with King Britt will more than satisfy a desire for the familiar with a side order of something much more. More event details HERE.

If you walk by the H Street RedRocks on a Saturday night, it looks like a classy pizza restaurant: high ceilings, exposed brick, couples noshing on pies topped with prosciutto and buffalo mozzarella. But if you climb the stairs, you’ll find a startlingly large dance floor with its own bar. Head up another flight of steps and you’re faced with a mezzanine looking down onto the dance floor, a spacious bar and a sizeable rooftop deck. “You watch people, and it’s like they’re discovering new secret space for the first time,” says Shaun Starkey, who’s responsible for organizing Friday and Saturday nights, and DJing a fair few himself.
There’s plenty to like: an airy space to get down; great sound; a solid list of beers and wines starting at $6; and groups of couches if you want to take a breather. This would be just another recommended weeknight destination on H Street’s crowded strip if Sharkey wasn’t booking special guests like acclaimed hip-hop MC Talib Kweli, New York mixtape legend Tony Touch and, this Saturday, Afrobeat and hip-hop party-rocker Rich Medina.
Sharkey got his start as a hip-hop producer in the late ’90s; he worked with Eminem and Rick Ross before releasing his 2004 debut “Sharkey’s Machine,” which included guest spots from Jean Grae, Grand Puba and Cannibal Ox. Sharkey says he’s built “personal relationships” with a lot of artists and DJs, which enables him to ask them to come to RedRocks without having to go through booking agents.
Then again, Sharkey isn’t just bringing in out-of-towners. He’s leaning on veteran groove suppliers Stereofaith and Tom Lim, among others. Two weeks ago, he coaxed Liv’s long-running “jheri-curl funk and champagne soul” retro event, Axel F, over to H Street, with returns possible.
RedRocks’s dance floor is only full on Friday and Saturday, with Sharkey considering an expansion to Thursday nights. “H Street is hard to do on weeknights,” he says. After previously booking events for Tropicalia and Sticky Rice, he may lean on his rolodex to fill other nights on the calendar.
Next up: Rich Medina, Jahsonic and Sharkey perform Saturday. Doors open at 8 p.m.

H Street's Newest Addition: Red Rocks
Over the past couple years, the space at 1348 H street, NE has definitely had its fair share of purposed restaurants and nights clubs claim the space. Just as quickly as hopeful H Street walker by's watched businesses signs go up on the building, they'd almost immediately be removed and replaced once again by a "for lease" sign. Whether it be licensing issues or land lord tenant issues, for one reason or another, no single business was able to get the front doors open. So the building sat like a giant over done eye sore, until now. Columbia Heights Neapolitan styled Pizzeria, RedRocks has completed their build out and should be a week or so from opening. And the build out looks damn good I might add! Read H Street Great Street's full story on the new location HERE.
