Cute overload

In the sweetest story of the day, kids reading to shelter kittehs.

Children in grades 1-8 who are able to read at any level may come into the shelter to read to the cats in our adoption room. Similar programs at other shelters across the country have seen the benefits the program has to offer.  The program will help children improve their reading skills while also helping the shelter animals.  Cats find the rhythmic sound of a voice very comforting and soothing.

The Book Buddies Program was implemented by ARL Program Coordinator, Kristi Rodriguez.  Her son, Sean, who’s a 10 year old 5th grader, served as an inspiration for the program.  He struggled with reading at school and so she brought him in to read to the cats and he loved it so much, he asked to come back.  She knew if her son liked reading to the cats, then other children would as well.  The program officially began in August 2013 and since then  Sean has shown remarkable improvement in his reading and now often reads to their dogs at home.

Magazine: Running in reverse, Cedric Givens has befuddled onlookers for decades

On a bright winter afternoon, Cedric Givens, at 60, bounces down the steps of his house on Eighth Street NE, turns around on the sidewalk and begins running backward. He eventually turns onto H Street and heads west, passing trendy new eateries and bars, still running backward, but now on the street. Then he crosses over the H Street Bridge, continues past a slew of new construction projects and reaches what’s left of Chinatown. By the time he gets to Seventh and H in Northwest, Givens is in the middle of the street. He is also spinning in circles. Hopping up and down. Shouting.

“Woot! Woot! Woot! All right! All right!”

Along the sidewalk and in the passing cars and trucks, the reactions are mixed to the sight of this backward-jogging, hooting and hollering man wearing wraparound sunglasses, a gray sweatshirt, red mittens, black running tights and sparkling white New Balance sneakers.

Copenhagen Zoo kill healthy giraffe and fed to lions, but not before showing children

This is the horrific moment schoolchildren crowded around to watch as the body of a perfectly healthy giraffe was chopped up before being fed to lions.

Despite more than 20,000 people signing an online petition to save two-year-old Marius, staff at Copenhagen Zoo yesterday went ahead and shot the animal with a bolt pistol.

Young children stood at arm’s length as his carcass was skinned and dissected before the meat was thrown to the lions.
